«В эпохи кризисов великих культур особенно остро пробуждается сознание содержащихся в них духовных ценностей, особенно ярко поднимается чувство любви к ним и вместе с тем желание и жажда хранить их и защищать», — сказано в 1922 году профессором Гревсом, в его предисловии к книге Николая Анциферова «Душа Петербурга».
Современная нам действительность усиливает упомянутую профессором жажду до перехватывающих горло спазмов: счет потерь ведется уже не на единицы отдельных объектов наследия, а переходит в категорию неисчисляемого. Половодье шальных денег, прорвавшее выстроенные предшествующими поколениями преграды нравственных ограничений, сметает все на своем пути. Достаточно сказать, что даже в годы войны на Невском проспекте лишь два дома пострадали от фашистских бомб, а за последние три года снесено пять.
Подлинное и живое уничтожается не только физическим разрушением старого. Но и утверждением безобразного, бездушного и агрессивно подавляющего все вокруг нового.

Для художников, любящих этот город и вдохновляемых им, Петербург — не просто выдающийся архитектурный памятник. Это еще и тепло солнечных бликов на щербатой штукатурке старых стен, и одинокий буксир на реке, и таинственные лабиринты петербургских дворов, и соскальзывающий с выгнутой спины моста запоздалый трамвай, и натруженные шеи подпирающих низкое небо кирпичных труб, все звуки и запахи родного города, чарующая игра света и тени — все это вместе, соприродное твоей душе, и откликается в ней пронзительной нежностью.
Вглядываясь в работы, собранные для выставки «Исчезающий Петербург», с грустью отмечаешь: вот и этого кусочка подлинного Петербурга уже нет, а этот «убит» чудовищными новостройками, и вон тот знакомый с детства вид остался только на полотне художника.

ENDANGERED HERITAGE
According to the recently published data of the Ministry of culture and mass communications, Russia has about 90 thousand listed monuments of history and culture and over 140 thousand newly identified objects of cultural heritage.
Unfortunately, no scientific inventory of these treasures has yet been taken and no accurate evaluation of their preservation has been made.
According to the approximate data published by the Ministry, 15 percent of listed objects of cultural heritage are in good condition and 20 percent are in satisfactory condition. The other 65 percent are in ruined, dangerous and unsatisfactory condition.
As far back as 1990 the historical center of St. Petersburg together with the palace-garden complexes of the suburbs was entered in the World Heritage List of UNESCO as “the unique and perfect implementation of the European idea of a regular city harmonized with the landscape on a vast territory during a period of 200 years”.
The city of the World heritage has 7783 listed monuments. These are architectural complexes, buildings and engineering structures, gardens and parks, ponds and canals, monumental and landscape sculpture, historical grave sites and archeological sites.
According to the estimates of the Committee for state use and protection of monuments, St. Petersburg currently has “1317 monuments in the active phase of destruction”. Many of them have the plate “Protected by the state”. ..
Although 63 years have passed since the end of the Second World War, hundreds of monuments of history and culture keep perishing annually in the peace time. They perish irretrievably because monuments are always individual and are always linked to a particular epoch, particular artists, their unique manner.
Death of a monument is always a loss to the cultural environment, a loss of the identity of a place. This is a break with the past, with the roots and sources. This is a break fraught with loss of national identity.
The image of Saint Petersburg is associated, first and foremost, with its architectural landscapes.
The historical center of the northern capital fascinates by its monumental grandeur and severe nobleness, multidimensional panoramas and spectacular arrangement of perspectives, inseparable union of water and stone. Its main value is the ensemble unity of the architectural environment. Town planning protection of the heritage is one of the most urgent issues. Everybody now recognizes (at least in word) the highest historical and cultural value of the ribbon building of the center of Petersburg, the multidimensional and multilayer architectural-spatial environment forming a complex, indivisible amalgamation of epochs.
“Petersburg strategy of preservation of the cultural heritage” approved by the city government in November 2005 states that “of highest value is the dimensional-spatial planning frame, configuration of the central water areas, the general city silhouette, panoramas of the rivers, ensembles of the major squares, perspectives of the main streets”.
However, beneath our eyes the historical city environment keeps dilapidating and degrading with obvious connivance of the authorities.
In the recent years the center of Petersburg has become an object of aggressive modern development. There has appeared the project of erecting the skyscraper of “Gazprom-City” (Okhta-Center) about 400 meters tall on the bank of the Neva opposite Smolny monastery; plans are being cherished to erect similar “business centers” on Vyborgskaya embankment of the Bolshaya Nevka and in the seaside part of Vasilievsky island.
The projects of skyscrapers construction in these districts of the Northern Venice are certain to pose a deadly threat to the general city silhouette that less than three years ago was declared by the Administration of Valentina Matvienko “the highest value” of the cultural heritage of Petersburg.
The new threats generated by the market economy revival together with inveterate diseases are to step up social movement in defense of the Heritage.
One of the leaders of the movement is Saint Petersburg City Branch of National Historic Society of Protection of Historic Monuments and Culture (VOOPIiK). The new Council of the Society includes renowned architects, restorers, fine art experts, historians, representatives of the youth organization of “Zhivoy gorod” (“Live city”). It is evident to us that it is impossible to save the cultural heritage without active public participation.
